Green River to Shaman's Gallery Itinerary: 5/1/2025-5/10/2025 (Flexible)

5/1 Friday - Denver to Green River; 347 miles, 5 hrs, 22 mins. Camp or motel.

5/2 - Green River to Horseshoe Canyon trailhead, 45.5 miles, 1 hr, 35 min. Map

San Rafael River bridge, 22 miles south of GR
Colonnade Arch trailhead, 42.5 miles south of GR
Horseshoe Canyon: The hike to the Great Gallery is seven miles (11.2 km) roundtrip, requiring five hours or more. A steep descent of 780 feet (237 m) at the beginning means a steep climb back up at the end of your hike. You may camp at the west rim trailhead (38.473834, -110.200404) on public land managed by the BLM. A vault toilet is provided but there is no water. NPS Horseshoe Canyon page

Horseshoe Canyon trailhead to Hiway 24 and Mollys’s Castle road to Goblin Valley, ~40 miles, 1 hr 30 min. Camp at Goblin Valley or primitive camp on BLM land

5/3 - Drive from Goblin Valley CG to Ding & Dang trailhead, ~2-4 miles, less than 15 mins.

Ding & Dang trail 6 miles, ~3.5 hrs. Ding & Dang trail This semi-technical canyoneering route is rated as a class 4 hike or 2A II on the ACA canyoneering scale. It requires down climbing short drops of about 10-12 feet. Technical gear is not needed to complete this route and a rope and rappelling are not required. That being said, a rope may be helpful as a hand line for the average hiker.

Continue drive down Wild Horse rd to Factory Butte, then to Caineville, ~60 miles, 2 hr.

Drive to Cathedral Valley campground, 34.7 miles, 2 hr, 9 min. Camp. Check out Bentonite Hills, Lower South Desert overlook, Above Temples Viewpoint, Upper South Desert Overlook, using Upper South Desert trail, Upper Cathedral Valley trail, on the way to Cathedral Valley CG. Camp.

5/4 - Cathedrals Trail to Cathedral Mountain, 6903 feet, 2.5 miles, 324 feet elevation gain. Continue drive of Cathedral Valley Loop, ~35 miles, 2 hrs. Check out Gypsum Sinkhole, Glass Mountain, Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon. Back to Caineville.

Drive to Hell’s Backbone rd., 68.5 miles, 1 hr, 30 mins.

Drive Hell’s Backbone rd. to Escalante, UT, 40.4 miles, 1 hr, 54 min. Check out Pine Creek Box Lower Trailhead, Map Drive down Smokey Mountain rd., camp.

5/5 – Continue down Smokey Mtn rd. to Death Ridge rd. to Horse Mtn rd. to Fourmile Canyon/Last Chance rd. to Fourmile Bench rd. to Cottonwood Canyon rd. Drive north on Cottonwood Canyon rd, ~65 miles, 3 hrs, 53 min. Drive to Kodachrome Basin State Park, 10.5 miles, 26 mins. Angel's Palace Trail, 1.5-mile loop trail near Cannonville, Utah. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 40 min to complete. Drive to Hiway 89, 40 miles, 1 hr, 43 min. Check out Grosvenor Arch, Cottonwood Narrows trail, 3.1 miles, 193 feet elevation gain – south to north. Cottonwood HooDoo trail, 1.8 miles, 623 feet elevation gain. Drive to White Rocks trailhead, 8.3 miles, 14 mins. Hike Whiterocks HooDoo loop, 5.4 mile loop, 380 feet. Drive to Stateline CG, 26.3 miles, 47 mins.

5/6 – Drive House Rock rd to Winter rd to Fredonia, 34.6 miles, 1 hr, 22 mins. Drive to Shaman’s Gallery, ~50 miles, 2-3 hrs. Hike to Shaman's Gallery, 7.7 miles RT, 1800 feet elevation gloss/gain.

5/6 – Drive Hiway 89 to Fredonia, 63.6 miles, 1 hr, 1 min. Drive to Shaman’s Gallery, ~50 miles, 2-3 hrs. Hike to Shaman's Gallery, 7.7 miles RT, 1800 feet elevation gloss/gain. Camp outside GCNP on BLM land.

5/7 – Drive out to Fredonia, maybe Pipe Spring National Monument.

5/7 – Drive out County Hiway 5 to Navajo Trail rd to County Hiway 5 to County Hiway 101 to BLM Road 1007 to I15, south of Mesquite. Drive to Las Vegas, 82 miles, 1 hr, 12 mins. Chris 2141 Chertsey Dr. Unit C LV NV 891085
